Winter Skincare Tips for Baby

With the very chilly weather we’ve been having recently baby skincare is really important. It is time to take extra care of your baby's delicate skin. Babies have thinner and more sensitive skin than adults, so they are more susceptible to dryness and irritation from cold, dry air.

Here are some of our favourite tips for keeping your baby's skin healthy and comfortable during the cold weather months!

Moisturise

In these colder months it's important to keep your baby's skin moisturised. Dry air can strip moisture from the skin, so it's important to use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser on your baby's skin at least once a day. This will help to prevent dryness and irritation.

Babyblooms’ award winning fragrance-free Moisturising Baby Lotion contains only natural ingredients such as beeswax and evening primrose oil. It is ideal to keep your baby’s skin moisturised and protected from the drying cold.

Dress baby warmly

Another important step in baby skincare during the cold weather is to protect your baby's skin from the elements.

When you take your baby outside, be sure to dress them in warm, protective clothing. This means covering their head, hands, and feet, as well as the rest of their body. Layering is also a good idea, as it will help to trap heat and keep your baby warm.

It's also a good idea to avoid exposing your baby's skin to extreme temperatures. This means avoiding sudden temperature changes, such as taking your baby from a warm car into a freezing outdoor environment. This can cause irritation and dryness, so it's best to gradually acclimate your baby to the cold by spending a few minutes outside before going out for a longer period of time.

Keeping your baby’s skin clean is another important aspect of baby skincare during the cold weather. Bathing your baby every day can strip their skin of its natural oils, so doctors recommend only bathing your baby up to 3 times a week.

When bathing your baby it's important to use a gentle, fragrance-free baby wash and to avoid scrubbing their skin too harshly - we recommend our Calming Baby Bath Bubbles. After bath time, gently pat your baby's skin dry and apply moisturiser while their skin is still damp as this will help to lock in moisture.

Add baby massage to baby skincare routine

During the colder months, adding massage to your baby skincare or baby bedtime routine can really help. Using a caring baby massage oil either before or instead of baby lotion will add an extra moisture boost to your baby’s delicate skin.

Baby massage stimulates circulation which helps regulate temperature and can be a really special bonding time.

Baby skincare is just one aspect to consider during these colder months and it’s important to be mindful of your baby's overall health. This means making sure they are getting enough sleep, and getting the right nutrition.

Good baby skincare means good hydration

Good levels of hydration are vital for skin health as well as for baby’s overall wellbeing and making sure your baby drinks enough is just as important during winter as it is during the warm summer months.

All of these factors can help to support healthy skin, as well as overall health and well-being.
